A week or so ago, my daughter was behaving badly. We were visiting friends when Mia decided that her young friend took her seat. A short tantrum, crying and fussing was next. My friend spoke to Mia saying that the sofa was for everyone to sit and friends do not treat one another like that. My daughter responded by turning her back. Within seconds, I banished her to time out in the living room.
Shortly after, Mia vanished to the back of the apartment, separated one of the teenage siblings from her IPod long enough to help her compose the following note, which was also colored with butterflies and flowers:
I love Jackie.
Isn’t this what Lent and Easter are all about? Nobody makes us madder than church folk!!! Frustrations in congregational life can sap our energy and weaken our resolve. Our ministries are stalled and growth seems slow or not at all. We are all guilty for our contribution to conflict, lethargy, faithlessness and sometimes “being kinda mean.”
But there is good news. Jesus the Christ lived among us so that we might have direction in our lives, love for neighbors and faith to continue sharing the gospel in our congregations and in the world. We all belong to the creator and all have a place and a mission. Because God loved us so much we need to be reminded to love each other and work together so that the transforming power of the gospel lives!
As Lent draws to a close, imagine Mia’s words as God’s words to you and recommit yourselves again to the work for which you have been called and more important, to the people of God in your midst.
I love ______________ (insert your name!). Sometimes, he’s/she’s kinda mean. I love you!!!
(I love you too!)

COMMUNICATORS CALLED TO WITNESS
Is it your call to the church to witness to where God is working in your congregation, presbytery or synod and then communicate those stories to others? If so, please consider joining us at Montreat Conference Center April 29 – May 2 to share “best practices” with other network members. You will also have the opportunity to learn new skills, hear from expert church communicators on emerging trends and spend time in contemplative worship and devotion. Then, our hope is that you return home renewed and inspired – continuing to be a communicator called to witness.

Hanover Street Choir, Olivet Singers, and the Canaan Baptist Church's "Gospel Vespers"
For its annual celebration of African American history, on March 2nd Hanover Street Presbyterian Church invited the Olivet Singers and the "Voices of Canaan," of Canaan Baptist Church to join its choir and congregation in "Gospel Vespers". The music was fervent and inspiring. Click on the picture to the left to see and hear a video of an excerpt, "Precious Lord, Take My Hand".
