Third field report from the mission team in Louisiana

At the house I am working, we really worked this morning. A large truck dropped off dry wall, siding, and other supplies and we had to move it all inside. There was a lot of it and it was heavy. The men were rather tired by late morning. They also pulled our women and took them to another job site. They were cleaning the house that is being dedicated tomorrow. We all look forward to going to the dedication and experiencing the joy and excitement as a family moves back into their house. This afternoon we began work on the siding of the house. Meanwhile plumbers and furnace installers came to the house and began their work on the inside.

At the other house the workers were busy correcting mistakes that had been made by previous workers or by the owner. But they continue to make progress to finishing the house. They took a tour of the lower 9th ward which has had very little rehabilitation done there. Even there they saw hope.

Most of our group went out for supper tonight and got a sample of New Orleans food. We avoided downtown (going there tomorrow) but that didn't stop us from getting some excellent seafood (don't worry Joy, Scott did not eat any seafood).

As we had the devotions tonight we reflected on how we have contributed to the peace and well-being of the city using Jeremiah 29 as our reference and also how we have seen Jesus in our midst using Jesus' parable of the Sheep and Goats in Matthew 25. We are touched by how grateful people are that we are here, even people whose houses we are not work at. Despite the terrible destruction, the slow recovery, and the often feelings of abandonment the people here have hope and believe that the city will be rebuilt. We are very grateful to be here to help in that process.
