First field report from the Mission Team in Louisiana

We divided up into two groups to work on two different homes.  One house is completely gutted and we worked to frame windows and doors, lay subflooring, and general cleanup.  The house had flooded with six feet of water.  We met the owners Claudette and Morgan.  Not much was able to be salvaged from the home.  They thought they had lost all the photos that they had but while cleaning out the house he found the photos of his children.  He said that he sat down on the floor and cried and praised God.

Also surviving the flood were two pictures of Jesus that Claudette had owned for a long time.  They are very special to her.

Morgan showed his appreciation to us by giving us 6 steamed crabs.  We will be snacking on those tonight.

The other group worked on the finishing this house.  The group met Kenny the owner.  Kenny is disabled but spends time working on the house.  Kenny is shown in the picture below.  He's awaiting a transplant.

Kenny's house was underwater up to the top of the roof.  When the house is completed it will house three families (two of them related and renting out one).  The men installed trim, base board, window frames, doors, while the women on their hands and knees scrubbed the grout out of the tile floor.

Here is a picture of the house we're repairing:

Just a word or two about our living conditions.  We are staying in dormitory style rooms.  All the men from our group are in one room and the women are sharing a room with some of the women from a California team.  We are sleeping in bunk beds and the I believe the floors are a little softer than the mattresses.  However, after our work today I think very few of us will be complaining about our beds.  We will all sleep well tonight.
